I am a Human-Computer Interaction and Health Informatics enthusiast. Qualified and experienced at working as a Research Assistant & Software Engineer. I have been working with several Associated Laboratories of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) since 2015. Researching & Developing (R&D) in areas such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User-Centered Design (UCD), Information Visualization (InfoVis) and Health Informatics (HI). Also lecturing on those areas. Prior to IST, I was part of several Entrepreneurship projects, from Agriculture to Advertisement, building systems for both business areas. For more information, please follow my academic page.
As a researcher, I am currently working on the intersection of HCI and AI in medical imaging. My research focus is on understanding and reducing the user burden of interactive technologies for healthcare professionals, patients, and people with disabilities across the design of future applications. Throughout my career, I have worked with several R&D laboratories, including INESC-ID, as well as ISR-Lisboa in collaboration with ITI more recently, associated laboratories from IST from University of Lisbon. Between August 2022 and January 2023, I worked with John Zimmerman and Adam Perer as a Visiting Scholar of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). During my time at the HCII @ CMU, we investigated how to blend human and machine intelligence for better decision-making. I have published in top-tier journals and presented at prestigious conferences, such as the IJHCS (Q1 in 2021), AI in Medicine (Q1 in 2022), CHI, ISS, ISBI, between others. My publications can be found next.
I have also worked as a software engineer with a focus on developing tools using JavaScript tools, such as NodeJS frameworks or the CornerstoneJS library, for medical imaging. I have also utilized Python and R for statistical analysis. My experience as a software engineer has allowed me to effectively develop and implement software solutions to support my research. With my software engineering background, I am capable of creating robust and efficient systems to facilitate data analysis and interpretation in the field of medical imaging.
My life as entrepreneur start with launching my own brand called oppr. The primary goal of this organization was to select the best technologies. The oppr organization aims at implementing the best solutions on several issues, as well as bringing together the highest talent across a technological community. By adopting those solutions to solve the problem and presenting a complete, as well as a coherent range of possibilities, our solutions and services are helping to improve performance. The organization positively overcome the challenges inherent in innovating activity. From this project, it makes me improve my managing capabilities by providing me with the problem of organizing and monitoring more than 20 people.
Following the above entrepreneur steps, I pass to the development of an Agriculture system for the Livestock management. The collaborative relation was with a Startup called Agroop, aiming at the development of a novel technological solution for monitoring farms. The Livestock project aims to quantitatively and qualitatively describing each Livestock production in terms of feed and Livestock resources, as well as produced commodities. By providing insights into several metrics, the Livestock system was important for the regions and agro-ecological zones of Portugal.
Finally, a third entrepreneurship project, called SnapJob (formally GigZap), was a part of my entrepreneur path. SnapJob (formally GigZap) is a platform for search and dissemination of punctual, temporary and volunteer jobs, which aggregates advertising from various companies and institutions across a single platform. Working for this project as Partner and Project Manager, the project gave me experience on an overall responsibility for the successful initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure.
